International Day of Persons with Disability

International Day of Persons with Disability

stk212417rkeToday, the 3rd of December the world celebrates the International Day of Persons with disability. As an organisation that works with children and adults with disabilities on a daily basis, Inspire Malta believes that this day should be an every day celebration.

This is because persons with disabilities, “the world’s largest minority”, are the world’s most resilient and determined individuals on the face of the earth.

Despite generally having poorer health, lower education achievements, fewer economic opportunities and higher rates of poverty, people with disabilities and their families are a force to be reckoned with.

They face obstacles on a daily basis – lack of services available to them (like information and communications technology (ICT), justice or transportation) or those resulting from legislation or policy, or from societal attitudes or discrimination, and yet they strive to be the best that they can.

Inspire believes that everyone has a right to equality and inclusion. Our mission is to try to help everyone with a disability achieve this. We do this by providing individuals and their families with educational, therapeutic and leisure services. We also advocate for inclusion, educate the general public, raise awareness among peers, and hold the best knowledge base on disability on the island.

The Inspire foundation is the result of a merger between Eden Foundation and Razzett Tal-Hbiberija – two leading charities that worked in the field of disability. The two organisations transferred all their resources and employees over to the new foundation, which now provides all the services in a one-stop-shop model avoiding duplication, enhancing service

Today, Inspire helps over 1000 individuals with various disabilities ranging from Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and others. We do this through many services and disability programmes that are offered at a highly subsidised rate or sometimes even for free.
