Project description
Leisure activities like sailing or hiking are important for our general wellbeing, mental health, and life satisfaction. However, when tourism companies and guides organise these activities, persons with additional support needs or neurodiverse conditions are often forgotten. Unusual sensory experiences, crowded spaces, safety instructions that are not readily understandable, inadequate environments, or incorrect approaches towards clients with neurodiverse conditions pose a barrier and hindrance for persons with additional support needs and neurodiverse conditions to participate and enjoy these activities. The aim of the project is to produce a protocol for accessible tourism that can be shared with tourism agencies and operators in Malta and Italy, so everyone feels included and comfortable when enjoying the beauty of these countries.
Inspire’s role in the project
Inspire as the leading NGO for persons with disabilities in Malta will contribute our knowledge and expertise in the needs of persons with neurodiverse conditions to the project. We will implement a pilot sailing activity in Malta together with our partner Yachting Malta Ltd. We work closely together with our Italian partners who will implement a pilot activity in hiking and mountaineering for persons with additional support needs and neurodiverse conditions in Sicily.
Project timeline
The project started on 1st January 2025 and will end on 31st December 2026.
Project partners
The project consortium consists of 5 partners in Malta and Sicily: Azienda Speciale Silvo Pastorale Troina, Corrieri dell’Oasi Società Cooperativa Sociale, Università degli Studi di Catania, Yachting Malta Ltd, and Inspire Malta.
