For many years, the Melita Foundation has been a valued partner of Inspire Foundation, sharing our commitment to creating opportunities for autistic children to learn, grow, and thrive. Through this long-standing collaboration, the Foundation has helped us strengthen specialist services, enhance learning environments, and ensure children receive the highest quality care and education. Built on shared values of inclusion, dignity, and accessibility, this partnership continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of hundreds of families.
This year, the Melita Foundation once again played a pivotal role in supporting Inspire’s STEP Programmes, specialised early intervention and school readiness services for autistic children aged three to six. Their generous contribution enabled us to equip our newly refurbished Dark Room with specialised sensory resources, creating an environment that supports learning, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing for more than 200 young learners.
Creating Purpose-Built Sensory Spaces
The recent expansion of our STEP premises, prompted by the programmes doubling in size, created the opportunity to redesign our sensory facilities to better meet the needs of the children we support. Every aspect of the refurbishment was carefully planned with the child at its centre, ensuring spaces that promote comfort, independence, engagement, and meaningful learning through play.
At the heart of this redevelopment is the Dark Room, a dedicated multisensory environment where children can safely explore, regulate their sensory experiences, and develop essential developmental skills. Thanks to the Melita Foundation’s support, Inspire was able to purchase a range of specialist resources, including:
- Quadrant Podium
- 175 cm Bubble Tube
- Bubble Column Security Bracket
- Weatherproof Chair Beanbag
- UV Fibre Optic Side Glow (100 Tails, 2 m)
- Sparkle Light
- Weighted Animals
- Weighted Blankets
These resources are far more than specialised equipment. They are therapeutic tools that help children improve sensory processing, develop concentration and attention, build activity tolerance, and strengthen visual tracking skills within a safe and supportive environment.
Supporting More Than 200 Young Learners
Today, the upgraded Dark Room benefits over 200 children attending Inspire’s STEP IEI and STEP Forward Programmes each week. For autistic children, sensory processing differences can make everyday experiences challenging, affecting how they respond to sounds, touch, movement, and visual stimuli. These differences can influence learning, communication, emotional regulation, and participation in daily activities.
A thoughtfully designed sensory environment provides the support children need to process sensory information more effectively, enabling them to engage confidently in learning, build relationships, and develop the skills needed for greater independence. It is an essential part of their educational journey rather than an additional resource.
Transforming Everyday Outcomes
The impact of the new sensory resources is already evident. Children using the Dark Room are demonstrating improvements in several key developmental areas, including:
