STEP Intensive Early Intervention

The Structured Training and Education Programme (STEP) is a specialised programme for children with difficulties on the autism spectrum. At STEP, highly individualised, specialised programmes are delivered through a multi-disciplinary team made up of tutors who are supported by the speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and psychologists.
SERVICE DELIVERY
STEP IEI comprises of a day programme based at Inspire, Bulebel. STEP IEI aims to provide intensive specialized training, education and support allowing the full development of each child’s potential and level of independence appropriate for his or her age.
Following an initial assessment, a tailor-made programme of intervention is developed and implemented with each individual child.
The programme includes one-to-one, group and independent work activities. The different activities tackle different developmental needs, thus taking a holistic approach towards the development of the child.

HOW WILL THE CHILD BENEFIT?
The development of the child’s communication will be supported with the use of augmentative means if indicated.
The child will gain independent and functional skills with the aim to generalize these in the home, school and community.
The generalization of appropriate behaviour across different settings through the use of structure, positive and low arousal approaches.
The child will be supported in acquiring skills such as pre-literacy and pre-numeracy concepts.

WHO IS THIS SERVICE FOR?
Caters for children up to the age of 5 years who have a diagnosis of autism, or have been identified through a process of screening to be at moderate to high risk of developing autism.
