INVITATION FOR THE PROVISION OF SEX EDUCATION DISABILITY EXPERTS TO UNDERTAKE TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS TO WORK WITH EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES

Education about sex and sexuality is an important aspect at any stage in ones life. People with an intellectual disability have the same range of sexual thoughts, attitudes, feelings, desires and fantasies as people without disabilities. Yet, they often have fewer opportunities to engage in age-appropriate sexual activity than others of the same age.

When people with an intellectual disability express their sexuality, it is often seen as a ‘problem’. Sex education is sometimes withheld, even though people with an intellectual disability experience sexually transmissible infections (STIs), unplanned pregnancy and sexual abuse at higher rates than the rest of the population.

The aim of this Expression of Interest is the engagement of sex education disability experts to undertake training of professionals to work with educators and families, as per terms of reference, in relation to a co-funded project by the Malta Community Chest Fund for Voluntary Organisations, being implemented by the Inspire Foundation. The Inspire Foundation aims to ensure that relevant expertise pertaining the subject of Sexuality and People with Disabilities is developed locally, enabling the development of programmes concerning the subject matter, tailored to local needs.
