Date set for this year’s Kayak for Charity Challenge.

Wednesday 02 July 2014, Malta – Thursday 17 July has been set as the target date for the Kayak for Charity team to attempt the return crossing Valletta-Pozzallo-Valletta on board of a double kayak. The team of two, composed by Maltese Ian Laferla and Italy-born Andrea Scorcia, is determined to complete the 200 km course in less than 40 hours, weather permitting.

The kayakers have been training hard for the event, covering long distances and getting used to paddling at night. One of the main training highlights was the circumnavigation of the whole Maltese Archipelago in 16 hours, in which occasion the kayakers had a very close encounter with two rare devil rays.

Kayak for Charity has been using sports in aid of worthy causes since 2008, and this year’s challenge, supported by Frank Salt Real Estate, is in aid of Inspire, the Foundation for Inclusion that helps over 1000 babies, children and adults with learning and physical disabilities, reach their fullest potential by providing educational, therapeutic and leisure services.

Inspire’s clients will be the protagonists on the morning of Saturday 5 July, when they will receive an introduction to kayaking by the Kayak for Charity team. On the same day, starting from 11 am, the general public is invited to have a taster of kayaking against a 5€ donation for Inspire. The event will be held at Marsamxett in Valletta, next to the Sliema Ferry. Bookings can be made on the Kayak for Charity Facebook page or by calling 79998381/79403546.

To donate and support the challenge, please send an SMS with the word “Kayak” to 50617359 (€2.33), 50618080 (€4.66), 50618926 (€6.99) or 50619215 (€11.65).
